A fun tradition turned tragic last weekend when two men were killed in an RV accident. The men were among a group of people who were en route to watch the BCS national football championship game in New Orleans. The fatal accident is under investigation.

A group of relatives regularly traveled to watch their favorite college football team play over the years. This year, they were heading out on a road trip to Louisiana in a motor home. There were a total of 14 people who were traveling in a rented 2002 Freightliner RV. The driver of the vehicle was a professional bus driver who regularly took road trips and was a friend of the family he was driving. About 15 years ago, he had suffered a broken neck in a different accident.

The driver and one other man were killed in the accident. At least 10 people on board were injured in the crash. Mississippi state troopers say that the RV went off the road on when they had a blowout and crashed into a tree.

While officers say that they do not believe the owner of the 2002 RV was negligent, it is unclear why the blowout occurred. The motor home is owned by a former professional football player who has not commented on the situation. Weather was not reported to be a factor, and alcohol was not believed to be involved either.

The sudden rupture of the RV tire could be the result of a number of circumstances. The vehicle may have been overloaded or the tire could have been underinflated. Whatever happened, blowouts have become less common as tires have become more reliable. If the integrity of the tire was compromised, it could be responsible for the accident.
